Catalogue Raisonné of Prints, Bronzes, and Multiples by Rolf Knie

Edited by Walter-Karl Walde

285 pages

In 1995, a comprehensive, heavily illustrated monograph on Rolf Knie’s life and work was self-published. The large retrospective exhibitions ("Halbzeit" in the ABB Halls in Baden and "Mi-Temps" in the exhibition halls of Lausanne) served as the impetus for this nearly 500-page book. In the appendix (pages 265 to 270), a catalogue of the first 95 prints, created between 1983 and 1995, can be found.

However, this first catalogue does not stand up to critical scrutiny, nor was it Rolf Knie’s intention at the time to give this listing of his lithographs, serigraphs, and multiples a scholarly touch. Since the publication of the "Halbzeit" book, nearly one hundred additional prints have been created. Many galleries, as well as collectors and art enthusiasts of Rolf Knie’s work, have been waiting for years for a carefully compiled catalogue that comprehensively documents his printmaking.

Catalogues raisonné do not necessarily have to be purely reference works. The colorful and diverse world of the circus, the central theme in Rolf Knie’s work, would not be well served by a purely scientific data collection. This book aims to meet both expectations. On the one hand, readers will find all the necessary details on Rolf Knie’s reproduced works—precise dimensions, information on substrates and printers, edition sizes, and details about the respective publishers. On the other hand, this catalogue also serves as a picture book, guiding the reader through the stylistic diversity of his work—from his early drawings to the years of abstraction, acid paintings, and collages, all the way to his current stylistic variations.

And this approach is highly interesting: Rolf Knie’s prints are stylistically congruent with the respective formal and thematic periods of his original works. Anyone looking to gain an overview of Rolf Knie’s stylistic development from 1980 to 2007 will find this book, in the sense of a retrospective, highly valuable—especially since no catalogue of his original works has been published so far. Of the approximately 180 prints and 30 multiples and bronzes, more than half are out of print—making this book a complete documentation of one of the most important bodies of work in Rolf Knie’s extensive artistic output.
